Literacy & Numeracy
English
At Francis Jordan, we are deeply committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction that gives every student the tools they need to become confident, capable communicators. Our English program is firmly grounded in the Science of Reading, an extensive body of research drawn from education, psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience. This research highlights how children learn to read and the most effective ways to teach them.
Systematic Synthetic Phonics with Sounds-Write
A key component of our literacy approach is the use of the Sounds-Write program, a highly effective, evidence-based phonics program designed to teach reading, spelling, and writing. Sounds-Write follows a systematic synthetic phonics approach, explicitly teaching students how sounds in spoken English are represented in written form. Through carefully sequenced lessons, students build strong phonemic awareness, decoding, and encoding skills; critical foundations for fluent reading and accurate spelling.
Rich Oral Language and Writing Development with Talk for Writing
In parallel with our phonics instruction, we implement the Talk for Writing program to develop students’ oral language, vocabulary, and writing skills. Developed by Pie Corbett, Talk for Writing uses imitation, innovation, and independent application to help children internalise language patterns and structure. Students first learn and retell quality model texts, then adapt these models, and finally create their own independent pieces. This approach supports deep understanding of narrative and non-fiction writing, helping children become thoughtful, creative, and capable writers.
Comprehensive Learning Support: MiniLit and MacqLit
To ensure that all students achieve literacy success, we offer a comprehensive learning support program that targets students who require additional assistance in reading. Our support includes:
- MiniLit (Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy): A small-group, early intervention program for students in Pre-Primary to Year 2 who require support with reading. MiniLit focuses on phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension.
- MacqLit (Macquarie Literacy Program): Designed for students in Year 3 and above who need targeted reading support, MacqLit continues building decoding skills and reading fluency, while expanding vocabulary and comprehension.
Both programs are delivered by trained staff and are aligned with the Science of Reading, ensuring continuity and consistency across all tiers of instruction. Through this multifaceted approach, explicit instruction, high-impact programs, and targeted intervention, we strive to ensure every child develops the strong literacy skills necessary for lifelong learning and success.
At Francis Jordan, we are proud to offer a literacy program that is structured, evidence-based, and inclusive, giving every child the opportunity to thrive.
Maths
At Francis Jordan Catholic School, Mathematics is taught in alignment with the Western Australian Curriculum, with a strong focus on developing deep conceptual understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning skills. We use an explicit teaching approach as our core instructional model, ensuring that students receive clear, structured lessons that build their mathematical knowledge progressively and with purpose.
Our teachers follow the Maths Trek program to guide instruction, which provides a consistent and research-based framework across year levels. Daily review sessions are embedded into the program to strengthen understanding, build recall of key concepts, and reinforce previously taught content. Fluency practice is a regular part of classroom routines, helping students to apply their skills quickly and accurately.
To further enhance teaching and learning in Mathematics, we have worked closely with renowned mathematics educator Dr Paul Swan. His professional learning workshops have provided our staff with valuable insights and strategies, building teacher confidence and competency in delivering high-quality, engaging maths instruction. This professional development has equipped our teachers with tools to better support diverse learners and deliver lessons that are both purposeful and effective.
In addition to explicit instruction, teachers integrate investigation-based tasks to promote critical thinking and apply mathematical understanding to real-world situations. These tasks help students make connections between classroom learning and everyday experiences, encouraging them to see mathematics as relevant and meaningful. Specific focus is also placed on teaching mathematical vocabulary, supporting students in understanding questions and articulating their thinking when solving real-world problems.
Assessment plays a key role in shaping our teaching. Ongoing formative and summative assessments guide planning and ensure learning is targeted to meet student needs. Data from assessments, including NAPLAN results, is regularly analysed by staff to inform teaching decisions and provide additional support where needed. Through this well-rounded and reflective approach, we aim to build confident, capable, and enthusiastic mathematicians.
