A Message from the Principal – Issue 11

A Message from the Principal – Issue 11

Dear Parents, Children and Friends,

Welcome back to Term Two. It was terrific to be on morning duty on Monday to see so many smiling faces. Many children were obviously happy to see their friends and classmates after the fortnight break. Speaking to many students in the past two days, it appears they had a lovely Easter and an wonderful holiday.

Parent – Teacher Interviews
It was wonderful to see so many parents availing of the opportunity to meet with their child’s class teacher in the final week of Term One. The decision to move these meetings to earlier in the year was seen as favourable by the staff. The parents I spoke to were happier with the Term One meeting, rather than at the end of Term Two. So too were they satisfied with the meetings being in the school hall. I welcome any other feedback in relation to the Parent – Teacher interviews. Please email if you wish to share your thoughts: damian.purcell@cewa.edu.au

Winter Uniform
Many of the children look resplendent in their Winter uniform. One week’s grace is normally given at the commencement of Term Two. You will be informed when the uniform is expected to be worn by all students.

Feedback About Immunisation
During the term holidays, Mrs Nagy began the audit to ensure that we have a copy of every child’s AIR Immunisation History Statement. She has completed all of the Junior Primary classes and is currently working through the students in Year 2. In instances where copies of children’s statements were required, Mrs Nagy contacted parents. Mrs Nagy was extremely grateful as to how quickly parents scanned and emailed the documentation. Thank you to those parents for being so obliging. It certainly makes Mrs Nagy’s job easier when she doesn’t have to contact people repeatedly.

Holy Week Liturgies
It was wonderful to see the numbers of parents, grandparents and visitors following the journey with our students during the Holy Week liturgies on the last day of Term One. Thank you once again for those who were able to support such an important event in our school calendar.

Pupil Free Day
Please be aware that there will be no school for students on Friday May 31 as the staff have a Professional Development day. This day has been planned to provide a four day break, as the WA Day public holiday occurs on Monday June 3. Please mark the Friday in your calendar if you have to make arrangements for your child to be minded.

Fortnightly Newsletter
From this term onwards, the newsletter will be sent out fortnightly, rather than weekly. It will be distributed during Weeks 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 of term.

Mrs Swann returns from her travels on Monday next week. I have enjoyed my time in the Acting Principal role, but I look forward to returning to my ‘cherubs’ in Year 5G. Enjoy the week ahead.

God bless.

Damian Purcell
Acting Principal

Project Compassion 2019
I sing the praises of parents at Francis Jordan regularly. I have taught at 8 schools and I have never witnessed such generosity from families as I have at Francis Jordan Catholic School. Once again, the kindness of families was evident in our recent Project Compassion appeal. As you know, we were aiming to provide water collection systems for schools in the Solomon Islands. We raised an incredible total of $2 274.40. This means we have provided 41 systems. THANK YOU for such outstanding generosity.

Confirmation Commitment Masses
This coming weekend, parents of students in Year 6 who are receiving their Confirmation are asked to take their child to Mass at Saint Simon Peter church for the Confirmation Commitment Mass. Mass times are as follows:

Saturday May 4 – 6.00pm

Sunday May 5 – 8.00am, 10.00am or 5.00pm

Mothers Day Liturgy And Morning Tea
An invitation to all Mums to attend our Mothers Day liturgy and morning tea starting at 8.45am in the school hall on Friday May 10. Your child should have brought home an invitation. Please return the reply slip at the bottom of the invitation for catering purposes.

Strategies for Improving Reading Comprehension
After the Term One Parent Interviews, it has come to our attention that providing an information session on how to improve reading comprehension may be beneficial.  In the coming weeks, I will set a date for this to happen.

In the meantime, here is one strategy that you could try at home which will help with children being able to retell information they have read.

  1. Allow your child to read the text out loud (or part of the text)
  2. Once they have read the text, go back to the beginning and ask them to read the first sentence.
  3. After reading this sentence, ask them to explain what the sentence means – they MUST begin the sentence with the sentence starter “I think this means……”
  4. Continue this process for a number of sentences.
  5. To add more depth, add the following part to the strategy – “I think this means……. and I know this because…..…”

Speech Pathologist
For those people who may not be aware, Francis Jordan has a visiting Speech Pathologist two days a week (Wednesday and Thursday).  Cassidy has worked with children for over 7 years now and has experience in assessment and treatment for speech, language, literacy, fluency/stuttering, working memory, voice, multimodal communication (communication using technology or without verbal speech), motor speech disorders and swallowing difficulties.  If you would like more information, please contact:

Francis Jordan Netball Club (FJNC) Issue 11

Francis Jordan Netball Club (FJNC) Issue 11

Welcome back – We’re Excited to be on court!

We hope all families enjoyed their holidays and had a great Easter! First term holidays are so important for us to rest and restore our energy for a busy second term, I hope you’re all ready and buzzing with renewed energy for a fabulous season ahead.

It was great to see all our FJNC girls on the courts in your new dresses – you all looked amazing and we received many compliments from our fellow clubs and from our JNA volunteers. Thank you to all the girls who bought our new hair ties and caps too, they looked great with our new uniform! Please remember to pop your payment through to our FJNC bank account.

Managers please remember to check your scorecards at the end of every game – the scorecard needs to be signed by the manager/coach, the scorer and captain. Please also remember if anyone plays up from another FJNC team, the player’s name needs to be written on the back of the scorecard.

Rotations – not necessary for U7 and U8s, but it is advisable throughout the season in order for girls to get an understanding for each position. It is probably best not to rotate girls too much through the game as they will get confused. We recommend two positions for each game, first half in one; second half in the other, if possible. Please let us know if you need help using the rotations spreadsheet distributed by Mark last term.

FJNC Corkers and Curly Ties
Corkers (1 for $7) and Curly ties (2 for $10) in our colours which make the outfit pop! We only have a limited number, please send an email to francisjordannc@yahoo.com.au to secure your purchases please make payment to our bank account or cash on the day: BSB 036-231, A/C 169 262

We have a limited number of FJNC black caps selling for $20 too please let us know if you would like to order one for mother’s day, father’s day, birthday’s etc!!

Important Dates for your FJNC Calendar

24 August 2019 End of Winter Season
25 August 2019 Winter Wind up and Trophy Presentation
