A Message from the Principal – Issue 13

Dear Parents, Children and Friends,

Pupil Free Day on Friday
Please note that 31 May is a Pupil Free Day. On this day, staff will undergo professional development. Should you require care for your children, please feel free to make contact with OSHC.

Change of Pupil Free Date for Term Three
The school was scheduled to have a Pupil Free Day on Monday 22 July; the first day back in term three. Due to the availability of the presenter, this day has been rescheduled to Friday 26 July. We apologise for the inconvenience caused in changing the date and thank you for your support and understanding.

Continuous Learning to Improve Student Outcomes
This year, the staff have been continually engaged in focusing on using our data to consistently improve student outcomes. Research shows that one of the most important ways to improve student outcomes is to build the capacity and knowledge of the teacher. Over the last term we have been focusing on a number of powerful and strategic elements to school improvement. These include:

  1. Using data to drive instruction;
  2. Building capacity for literacy assessment and literacy instruction;
  3. Establishing professional learning communities to share successful practice.

Staff have been trained in effective data collection strategies and will now focus on how to use this data to ensure we are meeting the needs of, and challenging, every child within our classroom. To aide in this, we have set high level end of year targets of each child in each year level in reading across the school. It should be noted that these are high level targets and not minimum standards. We want the best for every child at Francis Jordan and believe that in challenging all students, they are then best placed to be effective and active citizens who can contribute meaningfully to their world.

The targets are based on reading ages and levels.

The first set of targets are for children in Pre Primary to Year Three and are based on PM Benchmarks. The end of year targets are as follows:

Pre Primary:   Level 5
Year One:  Level 15
Year Two: Level 25
Year Three: Level 30 (By the end of semester one)

Once a child reaches Level 30 and finishes PM Benchmarks, a reading age is established using an Informal Prose Inventory Assessment. For children in Year Three to Year Six, their target for reading is 12 months above their chronological age (actual age).

To use a sporting analogy, in order to ensure our children achieve success, we need to show them where the game is played and where the goal posts are. We will be sharing these targets with children in the school, as I am with you, as research shows that strong and transparent partnerships between teachers, parents and children are integral to each child reaching their potential.

At the professional development day this Friday, staff will be setting individual goals for each child in their classroom in reading and sharing these with their students, along with strategies and focus areas on how to get there. I encourage parents to speak with their child’s teacher to regularly to check in on their child’s progress and support them through regular reading at home. I look forward to these robust conversations and actively celebrating our children’s success.

Cross Country Carnival
Tomorrow is our school Cross Country Carnival. Our event begins at 8.50am and will conclude with presentations at 1.10pm I thank Miss Lawson for preparing the children for this carnival and for our staff for giving freely of their time to coach our students in Running Club in the morning. I look forward to seeing you there.

School Photos
On Monday a note was sent home with every student regarding school photos, which will be taking place on Tuesday 4 June and Wednesday 5 June.  Please ensure you have read the uniform requirements carefully and checked the timetable on the back of the sheet.  If you need to visit the uniform shop before the day, it is open TOMORROW from 8.00-9.00am.  With Friday being a pupil free day and Monday being a public holiday it will be important that we are all prepared.

Tim Winton Award for Young Writers
The Tim Winton Award for young Writers is a writing competition open to Western Australian school students which encourages imagination, innovation and creativity.  Last year our very own Jesse Jacob was a finalist for her narrative; The Adventures of Jeffery Bob.  Entries open at 9.30am on Tuesday 4 June.  To enter, register and submit your story online before 5.30pm on Monday 24 June 2019.  For further information, please visit or click here: FAQ

Reading Data
Since the beginning the year you have heard a lot of talk about one of our school’s major foci; the collection of relevant data to improve the teaching and learning of reading.  As a staff we are now at the point where we have established consistent practices for the collection of that data.  This Friday, at our professional development day we will be analysing this data and setting goals for every student in our school.  These goals will be specific for each individual.  These goals will then shape how we teach reading in the classroom.  As educators, we are very excited about the prospect of what this means for your child and the possibilities for them to improve their reading fluency and comprehension.

Woolworths Earn and Learn is BACK for 2019
This year the funds will go towards updating Kindy Resources – puzzles, books, game.   To be a part of this, each time you shop at Woolworths between May 1 and June 25, you will earn ONE sticker for EVERY $10 spent. THEN stick your stickers to an OFFICIAL Sticker Sheet (each child will bring ONE home and more are available in the front office). Then, your child can ‘post’ completed Sticker Sheets either into the Earn and Learn box in the front office OR directly into the Earn and Learn box located at the front of Woolworths Currambine (make sure you fill up the box with OUR school logo on it!) It’s that simple to make a HUGE difference! Thanks for your support!

On Friday 14 June at 7pm
At Lion Thai, 4/42 Grand Boulevard Joondalup
BYO alcohol.  Soft drinks available to purchase.
Please RSVP to Ebaney on 0402 762 198 by Monday 10th June.

Team Lightning (U8) – Team of the Fortnight
Coach Rebecca Michael’s wonderful words for her team – What a great start to the season, congratulations to all the Lightning girls! We have 2 new players, Quinn and Annie who have picked the game up very quickly and have shown some super skills already. Over the first few weeks we’ve seen great defence and intercepting from our defenders. Our shooters must be practicing at home because some of the goal shooting has been excellent. Look out Fever!! The girls have done a great job at applying what they learn at training into the game on Saturday. In particular getting in front and finding space (thanks Bron for your drillls). They are all working really well together. Keep up the good work girls. Go Lightning

What is a club without players? We are reaching out to parents who would like to enrol their child with FJNC for Spring 2019 and Winter 2020 season. Please contact us and let us know you will be wanting to enrol with us for the next two seasons as it would be a shame for us not to have a succession plan.

Please contact us at or send a message to us on FB for more information on joining the Committee, or if you would like to enrol your child for next season. Boys encouraged too!
