A Message from the Principal – Issue 16

A Message from the Principal – Issue 16

Dear Parents, Children and Friends,

Welcome Back
I would like to welcome everyone back to school for Term Three.  It has been so lovely to hear the amazing holiday stories from the children and the excitement of seeing their friends on the first day.  We welcome Miss Gloria Casserly back to school after being on long service leave in Semester One.  Gloria Casserly will be teaching predominantly in Pre-Primary on Thursday and Friday and for a short time in Pre-Kindy on Thursday.  We also continue to keep Mrs Miranda Swann in our prayers while she is on sick leave for the next two weeks.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our families who are new to the school in Semester Two.  We have a new family in Kindy and one in Year 1W.  I hope you will find your time at Francis Jordan to be a richly rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Staff Professional Development Day
This Friday is PUPIL FREE.  The staff will participate in a day of looking at best practice in literacy.  We will be looking at the research behind what a literacy block should look like and how we can adapt what we currently do at Francis Jordan.  You may have noticed that the timetable when your children do their specialists lesson has changed this semester.  This has all been done to ensure literacy and numeracy blocks are uninterrupted blocks of time.

Can I please ask that all parents abide by the parking rules of the kiss and drive area.  It appears that some parents are parking in the kiss and drive when they are not supposed to.  This causes congestion and a greater possibility of accidents.  It is up to all parents to cooperate with the parking rules to ensure the smooth flow and safest possible drop off and pick up of our students.  You may have notice that over the holidays wheel stoppers have been installed in the parking bays near the Pre-Primary playground.  These stoppers will ensure that cars do not park close to, or roll onto the footpath.

Cyber Security
Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has recently been the subject of false email representations designed to obtain personal information.  In reviewing the response to the recent threat to our system’s cyber security, please be assured that CEWA has systems and measures in place to monitor and respond quickly to cyber security incidents.  If you would like further information about this please click HERE

Uniform Consultation Group
In 2020 we will be adding some items to our uniform shop which will provide options for girls to wear shorts or pants rather than the summer tunic or winter pinafore.  The discussions at this stage are still at a Board level; however, there will be a call out in the second half of this term for a number of parent representatives to form part of a consultation group.  A group with representatives from the school leadership team, School Board, P&F and parent body will make the final decisions on what will be added to the current uniform options.  Please note that this review of the uniform policy in 2019 will be only for the purposes of adding options for girls to provide greater comfort and developmentally appropriate options, particularly for junior primary children.

Kind regards,

Gloria Ward
Acting Principal

Parish Corner

Each year, St Simon Peter Parish conducts a special program for people who are not Catholics, but would like to know about the Catholic Faith, called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). It is a relaxed and friendly program in which people learn about God and His Church in weekly meetings in an adult group. They get accurate information about what the Catholic Church really teaches, and there is ample time for discussion. There are no obligations and no pressure. The program concludes at Easter when people make their own choice to enter the Church and receive the Sacraments. It will begin with an introductory session in the Parish Centre on Wednesday evening 31st July at 7.30pm and continue on a weekly basis until Easter when those who want to, can enter the Church. Catholics who were baptised but did not subsequently receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation are also welcome. Every year people come along to listen, and every year they find themselves responding to the truth. Enquiries to the Parish office on 9300 4885

Curriculum News Issue 16

You may have noticed that the specialist timetable for this semester has changed.  Therefore, the days your child goes to sport, music, technology and Indonesian have changed.  The reason for this change is to allow most classes to have uninterrupted teaching blocks in the morning and after recess.  These teaching blocks will be used for our structured literacy and numeracy times.

Our 90-120 minute literacy block will consist of the explicit teaching of a synthetic spelling program, reading comprehension skills and writing (whereby many classes use the Talk 4 Writing program).  The 60-90 minute numeracy block will incorporate the teaching of mental maths, explicit teaching of the concept, activities that develop understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning, and finally a plenary or reflection time.  These lessons will be differentiated to cater for the range of academic levels within the classroom.

I will continue to provide information about the literacy and numeracy blocks in future newsletters.
