Congratulations to Matthew Sabouri who was awarded a special trophy at assembly on Friday for achieving the highest score in the Primary School Mathematics Competition which Year 6 students take part in during the year.
It was great to see so many families come along to support our disco on Friday evening. I know that our students love coming along and once again this latest disco was well supported. An opportunity to share your feedback on some of the changes that were trialed this time around is available at our P&F meeting tonight. I invite families to come along and share their ideas that can be considered for future planning. I offer my sincere thanks to all of our dedicated members of the P&F Association who organised and assisted with the evening in order to make this event such an enjoyable one for our students. Thanks to all parents and teachers who helped out in some way.

Annual General Meeting
This year our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Wednesday 21st November at 6.00pm. Information about the election process for positions on either the School Board or the P&F Association Executive and Committee will be shared in coming weeks. I encourage parents to consider assisting our school community by serving on one of these committees in any of the positions that are open for re-election.
To assist with our planning for 2019, it would be appreciated if families who will be relocating and not returning to Francis Jordan next year notify us, in writing, as soon as possible. This information enables us to finalise class groupings as well as our budget and staffing requirements for next year.
Congratulations to our Recent GOLD SLIP Recipients.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
God, our Father, may the presence of Your Spirit be evident in our Francis Jordan Catholic School community. Help us to be large of heart, broad in vision and generous in working for the common good of this School Community entrusted to our care. Amen
This Friday (November 2) we will be having the All Souls liturgy in the school hall starting at 11.00am. This liturgy gives us the opportunity to pray for anyone we know who has passed away. Parents are most welcome to attend. At the liturgy, the students will have the opportunity to place a photo of someone they know who has passed away on the prayer focus area. They may also write a prayer and place it if they wish. If you have a photo of a loved one, please send it in with your child. Please ensure your family name is on the back so the photo can be returned to you.
TERM FOUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DATES
OTHER RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EVENTS
Salvatorian Faction Day liturgy – Friday November 9 – 8.30am in the school Hall. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Remembrance Day liturgy – Friday November 9 – 11.00am in the school hall. Parents are invited to attend this ceremony.
Year 3 to 6 Reconciliation – Tuesday November 27 in the school hall.
Year 6 Graduation Practice – Monday December 3 – 9.30am at the Saint Simon Peter Church.
2018 Graduation / Thanksgiving Mass – Tuesday December 4 commencing at 6.00pm. All students in Year 1 to Year 6 are expected to attend this Mass.
Collaboration is the chorus line of educational improvement. Whether teachers should collaborate is no longer an issue. The key question now is what are better and worse ways to collaborate? Our teachers and education assistants collaborate with staff from St Simon Peter, St Anthony’s, Brighton Catholic, St Andrew’s and St Elizabeth’s every term as a part of our Collaborative Catholic Communities (CCC) initiative. This collaboration takes place during termly combined staff meetings and the conversation continues online through the use of Microsoft Teams. This initiative enables our teachers and education assistants to meet with educators from other schools to share their ideas and initiatives. It is an important professional learning community which improves teacher effectiveness and student outcomes. We recently hosted our CCC meeting for Term Four and it was wonderful to have so many visitors to our school. Our teachers and education assistants enjoyed having the opportunity to show their classrooms to other educators and engage in a collaborative learning conversation. I thank our dedicated staff for their commitment to this after school professional learning.
Last week the children made the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We were very proud of the way they conducted themselves with reverence and maturity and participated in the mass fully.
This week the children buddied up with the 2G class, to share their electronic books about Reconciliation. Their books demonstrated their understanding of the Sacrament and steps to the Rite. It was wonderful to see the children sharing their expertise and experience with the Year 2s.
This term we are reading the novel, ‘Captain Jimmy Cook Discovers Third Grade’, by Kate and Jol Temple. So far we have found the text engaging, funny and a little bit cheeky. This week we have looked at a catastrophic event that happened in the story and innovated it, rewriting it from another characters’ perspective.
In Geography we have been collecting research on an Australian natural feature for our major piece of work for the Term. The students are using Book Creator to make an infographic poster about their chosen place. They will also be looking at how the place is protected and conserved for the future.

Classroom News – 5G
Year Five have finished their study about The Solar System.
Combining Science with Technology they designed and constructed a class shelter to protect themselves from an asteroid attack. You can see several of the models below. After making a physical 3D model they made a virtual model using Minecraft Education.
The students enjoyed an excursion to the Sci Tech planetarium to learn more about the Solar System and conduct investigations working like scientists.

Classroom News – Music
Term 3 was a busy and exciting time in Music, with many students in Years 5 and 6 participating in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.
A HUGE thank you and congratulations to all students, parents, and instrumental tutors for all your hard work and dedication this year! The students of Francis Jordan received numerous awards, and lots of very positive feedback from the adjudicators. A special congratulations to the Flute Ensemble for their selection to perform at the Shield Playoffs!
In the first few weeks of Term 4, students from Years 2 to 6 have been writing and performing their musical compositions. Years 2 and 3 displayed their prowess on percussion, while the Year 4 and 5 students added some remarkable recorder to their percussion skills. Meanwhile, the Year 6s utilitised ukuleles and percussion to create their compositions. There was even singing in some of the compositions! Did you know that we have so many talented and creative young people at Francis Jordan?
As we approach the end of the school year, students in all year levels will be experiencing what it is like to play as a class “ensemble” or “band” as we learn some new Christmas songs, and play some old favourites!
Last Friday night saw our final disco for 2018 held in the Hall and as usual it was a raging success. We had over 200 children through the door and each and every single one of them left with a huge smile on their face. The feedback from parents and kids has been largely positive.
We trialed a couple of changes and new ideas this time around and will be discussing them at the next P & F meeting to see if those changes will be a permanent fixture, so watch this space . . . . or come to a P&F meeting so you can be part of the decision making process and be privy to the reasoning behind all the decisions that are made.
Our school disco’s are a huge team effort with the planning and preparation starting months in advance. Thank you to Tim Tolley, Naomi Agosta, Nadene Andrews, Lindy McQueen, Marie Paragalli, Guy Paragalli, Keris Gordon, Sinead Forbes, Jacqui Fernando and Louisa Collins for your invaluable contributions and planning in the lead up to the event. Thank you also to Ryan Gordon, Danita James & Anna Admans for stepping up and helping out on the night. Without support from our parent community these events would not run as smoothly as they do.
The next event that your P&F is proudly bringing to you is the Colour Run, which is scheduled for Friday, 9 November 2018 and is being co ordinated by Keris Gordon. There is an event listed on the school Facebook page so register your interest there and you will be privy to any updates as they are posted.
As with all our events we would love some parent help, so feel free to join in the fun and lend a hand.
Best of luck with all your sponsors!
If you have any queries regarding how to get involved in the P&F please do not hesitate to contact me.
