Friday is certainly on target to be a busy day. I do hope you will be able to join us at some point on Friday, at either our Salvatorian Liturgy at 8.30 am or for our Remembrance Liturgy at 11.00 am. Please consider coming along to join us during the day.

Staffing update

This week we congratulate Natalie Millar on the news that she will be taking up a teaching position at Padbury Catholic School next year. Natalie, who has been a long serving member of our Francis Jordan staff will be very much missed by our staff and students. We will farewell Natalie officially in December.

Congratulations Jared and Amelia

Congratulations to Jared Cooper and Amelia Donohue who represented Francis Jordan today at the Young Voices Competition at Liwara. Well done to both students for their dedication and preparation for their presentations today.

Water Tanks for Thailand.

At Hymn Singing this morning, Mr Purcell showed our children a very special video which was created by Darcy Brooks, the daughter of Mrs Mandy Brooks. The video outlines the inspirational journey of the fundraising achievements by two of our wonderful staff members; Mrs Brooks and her daughter, Darcy and Louise Richards which provided much needed assistance to an orphanage in Thailand. As a school, the generous contributions by our families also helped to fund this project with the very successful cake stall that was held last term. Please consider taking the time to take a look at the video with your family. It will most certainly provide an up-lifting and inspiring glimpse of how we can all make a difference to make every day count!  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2MTWL2oYrqM

During Digital Technology lessons, our Year 4 students have been learning about digital systems using Makey Makey kits. In small groups, students decided to make a specific digital system, for example a Makey Makey game controller, water piano or drum kit.

Our Year 3 student are learning how to create 3D models using Paint 3D. This week students created a 3D monster.

Year 6 students have explored the use of RGB, represented as three binary digits, to create a coloured image.

I congratulate the wonderful work of our students under the skilled guidance of Miss Araujo.

Leaving Families

To assist with our planning for 2019, it would be appreciated if families who will be relocating and not returning to Francis Jordan next year notify us, in writing, as soon as possible. This information enables us to finalise class groupings as well as our budget and also accurately plan staffing arrangements.

Calling for volunteers – we need your help!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please contact Mrs Manners.

Congratulations to our Recent GOLD SLIP Recipients.

This year we have been taking part in the Literacy and Numeracy Pilot Project. This initiative, facilitated by consultants from Catholic Education Western Australia, has provided us with the opportunity to reflect on our current teaching practices, celebrate areas of strength and identify areas for improvement. Schools involved in this project were required to choose literacy or numeracy as a focus area. After looking at student data and school priorities, we decided to focus on literacy, in particular our teaching of grammar.

A key part of this project involved surveying our students, teachers and parents. This data was shared with staff and a reflective exercise then took place, looking at how grammar is currently taught in our classrooms. As a staff, we began to explore functional grammar and discuss how grammar can be taught with a more ‘hands-on’ approach moving forward. Our Year One and Year Four teachers have been our pilot classrooms, integrating this approach in their classrooms. I thank Mrs Millar, Mrs Crosby, Miss Parker and Mrs Rennie for their work in this area. Yesterday, Mrs Millar, Miss Parker, Mrs Manners and I presented our journey to 13 different CEWA schools. We enjoyed sharing our new learning with others and, in-turn, learning from our colleagues.

Classroom News – 3W

We have had a busy start to Term Four in Year 3W.

Last week the children made the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We were very proud of the way they conducted themselves with reverence and maturity and participated in the mass fully.

This week the children buddied up with the 2G class, to share their electronic books about Reconciliation. Their books demonstrated their understanding of the Sacrament and steps to the Rite. It was wonderful to see the children sharing their expertise and experience with the Year 2s.

This term we are reading the novel, ‘Captain Jimmy Cook Discovers Third Grade’, by Kate and Jol Temple. So far we have found the text engaging, funny and a little bit cheeky. This week we have looked at a catastrophic event that happened in the story and innovated it, rewriting it from another characters’ perspective.

In Geography we have been collecting research on an Australian natural feature for our major piece of work for the Term. The students are using Book Creator to make an infographic poster about their chosen place. They will also be looking at how the place is protected and conserved for the future.

Classroom News – 5G

Year Five have finished their study about The Solar System.

Combining Science with Technology they designed and constructed a class shelter to protect themselves from an asteroid attack. You can see several of the models below. After making a physical 3D model they made a virtual model using Minecraft Education.

The students enjoyed an excursion to the Sci Tech planetarium to learn more about the Solar System and conduct investigations working like scientists.

Classroom News – Music

Term 3 was a busy and exciting time in Music, with many students in Years 5 and 6 participating in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.

A HUGE thank you and congratulations to all students, parents, and instrumental tutors for all your hard work and dedication this year! The students of Francis Jordan received numerous awards, and lots of very positive feedback from the adjudicators. A special congratulations to the Flute Ensemble for their selection to perform at the Shield Playoffs!

In the first few weeks of Term 4, students from Years 2 to 6 have been writing and performing their musical compositions. Years 2 and 3 displayed their prowess on percussion, while the Year 4 and 5 students added some remarkable recorder to their percussion skills. Meanwhile, the Year 6s utilitised ukuleles and percussion to create their compositions. There was even singing in some of the compositions! Did you know that we have so many talented and creative young people at Francis Jordan?

As we approach the end of the school year, students in all year levels will be experiencing what it is like to play as a class “ensemble” or “band” as we learn some new Christmas songs, and play some old favourites!
